Armed or Unarmed? How to Choose the Right Guard for Your Property

One of the first questions property owners ask is whether they need an armed guard. The honest answer for most construction sites, offices, retail stores, and residential communities is no. A trained, uniformed, unarmed officer provides the visible presence, the documented patrols, and the fast escalation that resolve the large majority of incidents.

Unarmed officers are the right fit when the primary goals are deterrence, access control, customer or resident interaction, and documentation. They cost less per hour, they fit the tone of most workplaces and communities, and they're trained to observe, report, and de-escalate rather than confront.

Armed coverage makes sense when the property or situation carries a specific elevated risk: high-value inventory with a history of aggressive theft, cash-heavy operations, credible threats against a person or business, or a location where police response times are long and incidents have already escalated. In those cases, an armed officer is a considered decision, not a default.

Whichever you choose, the details matter more than the label: is the officer trained and licensed, briefed on your property, following written post orders, and logging every shift? A well-run unarmed post outperforms a poorly supervised armed one every time.

During a site walk, Security Perú Services will tell you plainly which option fits your property and why. Most of the time that's unarmed. When it isn't, we'll explain what we're seeing that changes the recommendation.
